Streamlined integration
Just click on "Add/Edit UI Mockup to this issue", edit your mockup, name it and save. The mockup will show up as an attachment on the issue, both as an image and as clean, human-readable, reusable, versioned XML data. Editing existing mockups is just as easy, click on the same link and you'll be able to access the mockups attached to the current issue to edit them. Installation instructions: same as all JIRA 'Version 1' plugins. Make sure attachments are enabled in your JIRA install!
Upgrading instructions: Make sure to delete all previous versions of the mockups JAR before restarting JIRA, or it might get confused!
Licensing and Pricing
We follow the same pricing model as JIRA (details here), for an extra-easy purchasing process. In short, Balsamiq Mockups for JIRA costs more or less half of what JIRA does.
Your Mockups for JIRA license and your JIRA licenses do NOT have to match, you can install a 25 Editors license of Mockups for JIRA on a 500 Editors license of JIRA, for instance. If you do, you'll be able to select which of your users can create and edit mockups via a JIRA user group. Full details here.
Every Mockups For JIRA license key can be used for equal number of Mockups For Desktop licenses, so that your designers and engineers will be able to work on their mockups when they are offline.

Community & Open Source licenses
Community
Balsamiq Mockups for JIRA is free for use by official non-profit organisations and charities (proof of non-profit status is required). There are certain organisations whose purpose is to make the world a better place, and we believe in helping them achieve that.
Community licenses are designed for organisations which are:
- non-profit,
- non-government,
- non-academic,
- non-commercial,
- non-political and
- secular
in nature, that would not otherwise be able to afford Balsamiq Mockups for JIRA. If your organisation is philanthropic in nature then you probably qualify.
To apply for a Community License, send us an email specifying the following information:
- The registered name of your organization
- Your organization's URL
- a short description of your organization
Open Source
Balsamiq Studios supports and believes in the Open Source movement. Balsamiq Mockups for JIRA is free for any Open Source project to use.
There are a few requirements for an Open Source license, the main ones being:
- Established code base
- Publicly available project website
- Using an approved open source license
- Your JIRA instance will be publicly accessible
To apply for an Open Source License, send us an email specifying the following information:
- Project Name
- Project URL - Your project must have a public URL
- Project Description - Please outline the goals of your project and its intended users.
- JIRA Instance URL.
- Open Source License(s) used - Licenses must be on the list of licenses approved by the Open Source Initiative at http://opensource.org/licenses/alphabetical
- Where can we download your source code?
Licensing Terms
A commercial/academic license entitles you to:
- Deploy a single instance of Balsamiq Mockups for JIRA as a plugin to a single instance of JIRA in a production environment on 1 server accessible by the number of editors licensed
- Unlimited Mockups
- Perpetual Balsamiq Mockups for JIRA use
- Software maintenance for 12 months - including all updates and online support
Licensing fees are quoted per total number of ‘Mockups editors’. A Mockup user is by definition any user account in the JIRA system that hosts Balsamiq Mockups who is a member of the balsamiq-mockups-editors group, i.e. anyone who can create and edit mockups while logged in. Unlimited ‘anonymous users’ are permitted to view mockups on all licenses.
The following organizations are eligible for a Balsamiq Academic License:
- Educational institutions: Public or private K-12, vocational schools, correspondence schools, junior colleges, colleges, universities, or scientific or technical schools that are accredited by a national accrediting agency.
- Administrative offices & boards of education: Provincial, district, regional, national and state administrative offices and authorities of the Educational Institutions defined above.
- Public libraries
- Public museums
- Home-school programs
- Research institutes that are affiliated with an accredited university.
- Teaching hospitals that are affiliated with an accredited university.
- Training and teaching organisations that are accredited by a statutory government qualifications body.
Proof of accreditation or affiliation may be required when ordering a Balsamiq Academic License.
